Chapter 2 Obesity
My project will focus on Noncommunicable diseases which are chronic, slow-progressing conditions NOT passed between people, like cardiovascular diseases, cancer, obesity and diabetes. These diseases are responsible for over 74% of global deaths and significantly impact individuals’ quality of life (WHO).
These ailments plague all countries in some way, but are particularly concerning because of their prevalence in developed countries(CDC)- it seems that many of these sicknesses may be the effect of new problems arising as we adapt and change our lifestyles and diet.
Of these diseases, I would like to focus on obesity, it seems important to understand how it takes hold in places with good food security and healthcare systems to find a way to stop the spread of a new kind of disease in societies that should set the standard.
Obesity also has an arguably more powerful impact of devloping countries because of the “double burden” of disease where both malnutrition and obesity are prevalent in weak healthcare systems (WHO)
